Deep C Divers are a Boston-based original rock band whose melodic hooks find a genuine appeal to the heart. Their music is a striking blend of alternative and classic rock with elements of funk and reggae tempered by pop sensibility.
Deep Chinappa is the band's lead singer, songwriter, composer, rhythm guitarist, and occasional percussionist.
Born and raised in South India (belonging to the the kodava community from Coorg), Deep began his musical career with a band that played covers of song from bands as diverse as the Beatles to Guns N' Roses. They became quite popular in India, and he became a local rock star of sorts.
In the mid-90's, Deep moved to Boston and fronted a goth metal band called Sift. He recorded two albums with them and played in famous venues like CBGB (NYC) and Mama Kin (Boston). In 1999, he taught himself to play the guitar and began writing his own songs. Soon after, Deep discovered he had an eclectic ability to blend different genres of music--rock, world, funk, reggae, & jazz--to create a unique sound.
Currently, Deep draws his inspiration from his career as a longtime social worker. In his day job, Deep helps youth with and without disabilities to discover their hidden potential, and in turn tries to find meaning in his own everyday life.
The struggles of being an artist with integrity and feelings can be a life-long journey. So his approach to writing songs revolves around real-life experiences of people he cares about.
DeepC has recorded 3 Solo albums.
Paul Erlich plays lead guitar and is an occasional keyboardist.
Interested in playing and understanding all styles of music, Paul's excellent ear has led him to specialize in improvisation. He draws inspiration from the classical music he was raised with, the Beatles and classic rock tunes he listened for on the radio, the Indian music he has grown to love, and the jazz he likes to check out in and around his current hometown of Boston.
Paul has performed and recorded solo and with diverse acts such as Alien Skin, Board of Education, Copal, Form of Funk, Four Elements, Katrin Roush, Kevin So, Stretch, and Deep Chinappa, in locales from Vermont to Texas to Walla Walla, Washington.
Gregg Marcus plays the bass.
One part mad scientist and two parts organizing force, Gregg holds the band together with sweet bass lines, quality live recordings, and a relentless drive to craft the perfect set list.
Gregg likes reggae, funk, blues, and anything original and captivating. He is a full-on sound geek to the point of building his own bass amp and creating a studio recording rig to capture the band's inspired moments.
John Bordage plays the drums.
John was born in Maine, but picked up the drums when he moved to San Diego in the late 80s, after which he played in a number bands ranging in styles from alternative rock, surf, classic rock and folk/blues roots music.
He has lived in Boston since 2012, playing in the folk-rock group The Grass Gypsies and a variety of other rock, folk, and world music projects before joining Deep C Divers.
